What advantage(s) do you get by stacking ships into a "fleet"

Does anyone know what the specific benefits are to stacking ships into a fleet? And yes, I know that it makes it easier to move them around on the map!

I think that:
- when a fleet attack, the combat is engaged until the defender ship is killed
- when a fllet is attacked, the defender ship is the one with teh greatest defense

As far I know that's it. The features mentioned by Peace Phonix are AFAIK not related to fleets. It's standard when you have more than one ship in the same square.

Maybe when defending. But not when attacking: all the fleet move when attacking.

When you have five ships with four movements each you can attack up to 20 times. But when they are stacked in a fleet you can only attack four times, right?

This was my experience from my first tests. Thus I never used fleet attack ...

Is that correct or did I get something wrong?

They way I see it is that fleet stacking is only usefull for moving large groups to a location. Instead of all those individual ships there all more organized.
When ships in a fleet attack it starts with one ship, then the next, then the next. you can select each one individualy to attack but when you choose the fleet its one at a time. When they defend its untill one ship is destroyed then the other one.. etc.

I thought that Galactic Civilizations didn't have fleets, or is this something in the Altarian expansion, which I haven't installed yet, but will get round to.

Can anyone just give me a basic idea of how to create fleets please? Even if there aren't any real advantages .

Thanks.

You just move several ships at the same spot, so that they are all in one place.

To the right of your screen is that small window where all the ships in that spot are displayed with little icons (i call it the fleet-window).

Right to the small ship symbols there is a small gadget, if you click that, all ships in that spot will be merged/stacked into a fleet. Once this is done there will be a little gadget under the first one, allowing you to disband the fleet again into single ships.

I hope this will help you (and that it does not sound too confusing, pardon my english).

Amaymon has a good description about fleet control and movement. The only real bonus to fleets is the ability to move many ships at once. The disadvantage to fleets is when you attack. If you attack an enemy ship with your fleet then all ships in that fleet use a turn instead of just the attacking ship.

note to Amaymon, your english is just fine.

aS FAR AS i'VE SEEN, THE FLEET ACTS LIKE ONE SHIP. i MEEN, LETS SAY YOU HAVE STACKED THREE STAR FIGHTERS. tHEY ACT LIKE A SINGLE SHIP WITH 9 ATTACK AND 3 DEFENCE. ALSO, i'VE NOTICED THAT YOU GET ABOUT HALF AN EXTRA ATTACK POINT FOR EVERY COUPLE ATTACK POINTS OF THE FLEET. (IN THE STAR FIGHTER EXAMPLE, THE ACTUAL ATTACK IS ALMOST 10. tHIS COULD BE FOR OTHER REASONS, OR A COINCEDENCE.)

Something not mentioned here is that fleeted transport ships will combine their forces in a ground assault. So instead of 4 1000 million attacks, you can do one attack with 4000 million troops.

Yes, this is especially important when you use one of those expensive invasion tactics. With a fleet you only need to pay it once.

Unused troops will be send back to their ship. i.e. when you attack with five ships with 1 Mil each and you loose 1,5 Mil you will have 0,5 Mil on the starsystem and three ships left over.
