I have photoshop, and I am going to try to convert several of the SEIV ship sets over to GalCiv, but won't be easy, since I am not PhotoShop skilled, and not very artsy, either.

MadMaz and fleabitfox, I've used Corel and Photoshop virtually every day for the past 6-1/2 years. I'd love to work out some basic ship modifications and graphics if somebody can tell me where this mysterious "ship encoder" can be had. I've dug into the game files, and the text looks easy enough to edit, but I can't get into the ship graphics without the utility.

Now if somebody wanted to do a Star Trek mod, that would be really nifty. (Hint)

Go to the url in the last message I posted. There's a forum there with some people who are getting started on a trek mod. I'm sure they'd welcome your help.

The encoder can be found in the mod forum in one (actually two I think) of the sticky topics from CariElf. You can go to the mod forum by clicking on the button on the left (or the top if you're using stardock central.)

Thanks for the tip and the util, MadMaz. But the URL for the Trek modders seems to be missing - your last post in this thread shows that it has been edited. Are Paramount's thought police more ruthless than Lucas'? Time will tell.

Nah, I think both of them have a policy of live and let live as long as they don't have a directly competing product. And the last time they pursued even that kind of conflict was a long, long time ago

Anyway, they haven't set up a forum for the trek stuff yet. Here is a link to their current discussion, which is at the the same site, one level up under ship mods: http://www.cdgroup.org/forums/tbs/gc/viewtopic.php?t=147 Link

turgotz has got some really nice looking tng models done. He's posted some pics here: http://www.geocities.com/guildshand/wips Link

As a newbie to the game and this board/forum, I was just wondering how mods work. Is there some sort of mod launcher out there as with Space Empires IV, or do you just load it as you would load a saved game? Can't wait to try out this Star Wars mod.

MadMaz,

I Dl your SW Mod, and tried to DL the Music Files but I keep getitng an "Internal Server Error."

Is there any way to post a new link so I can get this file as well?

There was a problem with the counter, so I just eliminated it. The link should work now.

Nobody has made a mod launcher for GCiv, so you really have to keep track of what you install yourself. Fortunately, most mods out there right now are events, so they do not overwrite any files. Usually they just add new data or graphics files. A few of the "replacement graphics" mods will overwrite stuff, so you may have to backup the originals if you wish to remove the mod later (for e.g. the mods that replace the minor races or add Angelina Jolie). Just check out the readme file before installing it.

btw, my Star Wars mod alters a lot of stuff, but it uses a standard installer/uninstaller that will backup your files appropriately.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind when I try using some of these mods.

MadMaz,

You may have missed these comments in the normal Jedi Republic threads. Posting them here for your convenience.

by Citizen Obi Wan Kenobi - 7/18/2003 9:33:15 PM
On a related note, I see that MadMaz, creator of the Star Wars mod, is still an unaligned independent. I humbly suggest that our lil' Republic would be a fine place for him to call home. An invitation from you as the leader of our group - and someone who uses his mod regularly - might just convince him to join with us...

by Citizen Jedi_Master_Yoda - 7/19/2003 1:24:26 AM
Greetings MadMaz, leader of the Jedi Republic I am. Used your Star Wars Mod have I and seeing you as a free agent brings warm feelings to my heart. Here, let me express my formal invitation to join the Jedi Republic, fit in well I feel you would...Hope I do that you will consider joining us. You I thank for considering.

Yoda and I are working on an independent Jedi Republic site. In addition to bringing a bit more of the roleplaying atmosphere to the empire, this would also be a great central location for new ship designs based on the SW universe, etc.

Empiring is all about having another level of fun with the game, whether it be game submissions, posts here in the forum, or modding. If you're interested, we'd be happy to have you here.

No, I didn't know anything about that. I haven't really read any thread that I didn't set to watch a long long time ago. I'd be happy to join your empire or whatever they're called and contribute my measly score for what they're worth, but I don't really play gciv for the time being (and haven't for a while.) But if you are interested in roleplaying SW, you can probably find me in Galaxies on the starsider server (unoffocial roleplaying server) after about a month or so. I'm taking the next several weeks off until they start their story arcs, to play KOTOR.

But I'm glad you like my SW conversion. If you or anybody else would like to contribute it, that would be great I've always wanted to SW events to it as well as change some of the text. Somebody gave me some suggestions on restructuring some of the ships I chose to include, but I don't know how workable it is. Right now, modifiying the tech tree isn't really workable, so you have to have 28 equivalent ships on each side. But I'd love to get more input on this from people who know or are into SW more than I am.

MadMaz,

Game scores are honestly no big deal. It would take MONTHS of rabid subscriptions to break into the top empire ranks at this point, and honestly I don't think anybody's looking that far ahead.

On the other hand, everybody here likes GalCiv, and has a bit of fun with the Star Wars theme. You've obviously sunk a ton of time into working on something you enjoy, and that's a philosophy that a lot of players here on the boards appreciate. Our own Master Yoda isn't the biggest game submitter; he was even talking about taking a brief vacation from GalCiv to sink his teeth into Knights of the Old Republic. Even so, you'll see him poking his lil' green nose into the threads on a fairly regular basis. Think of this as more of a "Yeah, we're into that stuff too - c'mon in!" sort of recruitment, rather than just bucking for a couple extra Metaverse points.

Over the next couple of weeks, Yoda and I are going to be revamping the Jedi Republic website. It's already functional, but it lacks...oomph. When it's up and ready, we'd be happy to have links to your mods, whether or not you officially join the Republic.

But "we would be honored if you would join us."

So... have there been any updates to the mod? Or did it sort of die off? I'm interested in swapping the Rebel ship graphics in favour of the Imperial ships, since they're much cooler.

#94  by Citizen MadMaz - 7/30/2003 1:35:06 AM

Yeah, I haven't worked on it since the last major release, and, for the time being, I don't have any plans to continue with it. You can go the the forum mentioned earlier in this thread if you're interested in learning more about the mod and any possible future development.

Hello
As the other forum is quiet desert, I will post here.

I simply want to thanks MadMaz for his work. I tried the Starwars TC and I really liked it. I would see with lot of pleasure a futur version with more SW events, ships for each races, etc...
I hope the 1000th asking person will convice MadMaz to continue his work

Thank you

Pask Hal

MadMaz,

I posted a link to this thread on the "Links" page of the new Jedi Republic website. With "Jedi" in the title, we occasionally get visitors who are really looking for your type of work. Because this is your thread, I won't jump on a soapbox and advertise the site with a hyperlink; anyone interested can find it easily enough.

I respect your desire to stay independent and empire-free, however. If you'd like me to remove the link, it's easily done. We're not trying to co-opt any of the work that you've done on this - it's your creation. We appreciate all of the time and effort that you put into this project. Just thought that it made sense for it to be available there.

Please advise.

#98  by Citizen MadMaz - 8/2/2003 11:25:46 PM

My advice is to drink plenty of fluids. As long as you abide by that, you're more than welcome to link to this thread. In fact, since the most current mod URL may be hard to find in this thread, it would probably be easier for your site's vistors if you linked directly to the CDG forum for the mod at http://www.cdgroup.org/forums/tbs/gc/index.php?h=1&pf=89 Link . They'd need to go there anyway to download the files. And feel free to plug your site here. I wouldn't mind following the link myself.

btw, I have no desire to be either independent or empire-free. (but thanks for checking ) I just haven't played the game in ages, so I didn't bother signing up. I don't even follow the forum much anymore. If I were playing, though, I'd certainly join

MadMaz,

Thanks! Updated the site with the new link. It's here:

http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/jedi_republic/ Link

If you're interested, we'd love to have you over here, whether you're playing the game actively or not. We have a couple of players who NEVER submitted a game, but a few of them contribute on the forums. All about the community.

Thanks for the plug!
