vincible,

I tried to load your GOTM but it hangs at 100%.

That's exactly the behavior I saw. I don't understand it.

A silence had settled over the crowd which had congregated in the Fellowship Hall courtyard. They had come sensing it was time for the announcement.

Theoden came striding out onto the stone balcony. Smiling broadly, he made the proclamation that they had all waited for...

"The Fellowship of the Ring Empire has now surpassed the 3 million point mark!"

Pandemonium ensued as a wild celebration erupted. It was said most of those present at the party were unable to remember any of the events that occured due to extreme drunkeness. But damn, what a party!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Yes, ladies and gentlefolk, we've done it! Congratulations to the Fellowship for all your dedication and participation. We couldn't have done it without each and every one of you!

My meager submission wasn't really all that great, for a Large/Maso. I really had expected a bit more, but I missed a few Wonders/TGs and I didn't feel like I was really sharp in that game. Maybe it's the cough medecine I'm on...

Anyway, I'll try to update the Metaverse Review sometime this weekend, but it may be the first of the week before I can get it done.

Have a great weekend, all! And once again, FOTR!

vincible,

I've just tried to erase the serial number for one of my games and I was able to load it.

Here's how:

I downloaded a freeware hex-editor XV132. Opened the game.galaxy file using the editor and searched for the text string "DN". Once the serial number is found, I "x"ed out all the characters except for "DN" and "GC1" (for Galciv) or "SDS" (for Drengin).

Give it a try. If it doesn't work, send the unedited savegame over to me.

vincible,

Are the rules on your GOTM website still valid for this GOTM?

If so, would like to play your GOTM over the weekend since 1.12 is delayed.

OTOH, 1.12 is coming out on Monday so your GOTM would likely be held under 1.12 rules so no point for me to play it under 1.11. Oh well.

During the commotion and reveling Smeagol does some Snooping..

He finds the Chamber where the one ring is stored.. and grabs it..

Smeagol "We's found you at last...My precous... my pretty precous"

Just then he turned around to find Ray standing behind him..

Smeagol " Tis my precous.. " Holding it behind his back getting ready to slip it on his finger..

Ray "Its not your Precous Smeagol"

Smeagol " Tis my precous.. Tis.. Tis.. Tis... "

Smeagol then Stands up straighter than normal and snarls...
Then BlueSteel's voice is heard...
"I must have the ring of ......."

Smeagol's voice:" Tis my precous.. Tis.. Tis.. Tis... "

BlueSteel's voice:" elven kind.. so that....."

Smeagol's voice:" Tis my precous.. Tis.. Tis.. Tis... you can't haves it back.. Tis mine"

Smeagol then slips the ring on his finger

Ray gases as Smeagol as he moves around the room...
By now there are Guards, Theoden and others at the door

Theoden: "See I told you he couldn't be trusted"

Smeagol can't understand it.. everyone can still see him.. and the Ring is burning his finger... Cold.. So Cold..

Ray "I told you it wasn't your Precous"

Just then Smeagol falls to the floor.. frozen solid.

Ray rushes over to Smeagol.. "Unexpected this is..."
Ray goes to remove the ring from Smeagol's finger..

Ray looks for it on all of Smeagols fingers but it isn't there... Where could it have gone

Ray: "Theoden.. get some help quickly.. I don't know whats happened.. but Poor Smeagol is frozen solid.. as if a powerfull spell has been cast.. We need to take him to the infermary quickly.. so we can determin what happened"

Theoden obeys his emperor reluctantly.. saying under his breath "He Deserves everything he gets.." .. the 2 guards help Theoden carry Smeagol to the infermery ..

Strange he doesn't feel cold..

{To be Continued)

Hi Cotal Ginata

Glad you are playing again. When you are maxing points from a huge maso do you still try to ally?

I played most of my games as good against all pure evil AI until nearly getting whipped because I "got good too fast" or someting and the Drengin wanted my hide in spite of my best diplomatic efforts. I had to use a terror star rush just to win, which is not very elegant. .

I am still experimenting but it seems like I lose the close relationship with the evil AI if I get "too good" (51,60,61???) too early. Once the evil AI goes from close to friendly in response to my morality bump, I have trouble getting them close again. So . . . my questions are:

Any further tips on the ally strategy? Are you always playing all pure evil AIs now? Don't you take the evil planet events initially and work your way back to good later in the game with the random pop-up morality events? Are you finding it easier to ally when you are evil or neutral? I am still trying to get the timing down on the alliance things.

My favorite game was getting all 5 major and 4 minors to ally with me while fighting each other. After that, dropping party palaces inside their sectors was unchallenged and the pace of the game was easy to control. It is also very funny to have my allies call me a "parasite". . . but they always seem to stay allied.

Hi ricbayer!

Yesh, I've got my cheesy style pretty down pat allying everyone . . . I think what I found (just lately) that makes it easier is (as you stated) basicaly pretending to be evil up until alliances. After that they ridicule you for taking all the good morality picks or sometimes (particularly if your way out in front) have a 'cultural identity crisis' and become good themselves! lol . . . which begs the question, If the AIs turn from thier evil ways and finish as good (or even saintly) should you try to finish good or evil (re the score bonus?)

But to answer some of your questions, um . . .

1. Yes, I play vs all pure Evil AIs,

2. Yes, I take all the nasty evil picks in my collony rush (if you get a critical mass of planets at the start your research will be fast enough to surpass the AI (easier than you think) . . . so I take PQ plannets of 12, 13 and 14 as well and force events (much more frequent these days) . . . this ensures I am evil looking and have a good moral on each planet (PQ or morality bonuses) and/or faster research (due to both collinization bonues and the sheer mass of planets I take) note - you can only really pawn collinization if you get a start in the middle.

3. After I get the basic diplomacy tools and Industrial theories to build a Manufacturing capital (although it causes me to miss one or two TGs and mabye a wonder) I leech all the research off everyone else (by virtue of diplomacy/trade bonuses) while setting social spending to 99%. Because I have probaly as many planets as all the AIs have put together and the 'badass' reputation to strike fear into thier hearts my revenue/population/influence is comparitively huge. While monitoring relations and all techs thier spitting out I build right up to an Econimic Exchange for nearly every planet.

4. By this time the AIs are going after Battleship Technology (with fewer planets it takes them a while to get it and thier bark is worse than thier bite until they do) . . . hehe! So I go into research mode and have free rein over all non-millitary produce and technology. If I've got it 'going on' I just take leases on wonders and TGs as they come up from my own research (or thiers if thier trying to be creative) then sell the tech to anyone who wants it. If I've 'really got it going on' I buy these wonders/TGs outright if I can. I am very scrupilous when it comes to trading TG for tech and will only do so if I believe thier are not a long term threat. For example, I'll give Micror-epair bots to anyone but Aprodisiac I will only every give to a struggling AI (eg has mabye one or two systems) . . .

5. Alliances . . . now that the minors are a bit more influencial (in version 1.11), I use this to my advantage! The AIs for whatever reason are impressed by your standing with the minors (why I don't know) . . . I've noticed that if you can get the minors to a close relationship (not hard to do) all the AIs will want to have your babies! (After you give them a boon off-course) . . . its bizzar, totally . . . and its something I've really just noticed recently . . .

If you get your hands at this point on either disruptors or battleship . . . your made in the shade (it might hurt your economy a bit to buy them) . . .

6. Now ally everyone (theres sometimes one AI who'll play the strong silent type and won't co-operate . . . doom and gloom on them if they don't come to the party before war breakes out). As you said now you can completely control the game, start putting momey into espionage so you can snatch techs they might beat you to or steal them outright.

7. As if you population wasn't big enough! Now build a few Combat Transports and dispatch them . . . vulture anything you like, the AIs ship movement are still quite pathetic . . .

8. You should finish your tech tree before they do (still a close race . . . shez they get a lot of bonuses on maso!), If morality checks don't give you the alignment you want I cheesely force events (collinizing anything that is roundinsh or even remotely planet like) . . . sad I know, but who cares! lol . . .

9. Be sure to build the Trade Wonder and finish the tech tree if you shift alignment abruptly . . .

10. Assimilate or destroy the few remaining systems

Well thats honestly all I do . . . it can all go horribly wrong at any stage up until the alliances after that I just like looking at the pretty screen . . .

All Evil AI's? Play evil yourself to start out? Gain all the best planetary benefits of being evil? Suck up to the all-evil crew, with no "crusading do-gooders" to have to worry about? Get them all into alliances? AI's never break off alliances once they are formed? Alliance option turned off? Or else one civ left unallied as you target them? Work your way back to good alignment? Gain "bonus" points for ending opposite the alignment of the starting AI's? Sucker punch your "allies" at your leisure to earn "bonus" points for a "conquest" victory?

Defies the imagination!

I could see doing that once or twice, for the novelty, but this game is too engaging to defang and declaw it like that, at least for me. Gosh, what's the point?

I finally tried a NONstandard alignment setup. I set them all to Random. What did I get? Two Saintly, two Good, one Evil. Good grief! That game ended in a four-way allied victory and it was mostly a snoozer. So I tried to go back to default, but there seems to be some bugs in that part of the game, and it gave me another randomized alignment game. I played it out, no spoilers, no reloads, would have been a one-sitting game except a storm blew through with 70mph gusts and knocked my power out for seven hours. Two Saintly, one Good, one Neutral, one Evil, and the poor Evil was a 2SC in the corner. That game was a little harder (because the Neutral was the dominant major) but not much. I think I'm done with random. I don't quite have it in me to lean AWAY from the bulk of the AI's and tick them all off at the same time, while leaning toward them only makes it too easy. At least with the default, there's no easy out.

I am losing even less nowadays, as I have gotten better at sucking up and bridging the gap until trade is initiated. Gifting a ship here or there in the early game really does wonders. (Is that what it feels like to benefit from the 1 IP trick? Heh. I still haven't tried that).

My latest game, still ongoing, is a Huge/Uncommon. I started with Alex in the next sector, Scotty two sectors away, and Cari partitioned off in their own cluster, with more yellow stars than all but one of the majors. ALL THREE BOUGHT, and even without diplo bonuses of any kind, wow what a slaughter. The sales from Deflector tech alone paid for my retirement. (If the Majors are changed to re-enable full whoring on Maso, I'd probably quit playing the game altogether, for lack of sufficient challenge). I've got 27k in the bank and the runaway AI (the one with more than two systems, heh) only just now got to dreads. I may beeline to terror stars and conquer with them in the early 90's! Never done terror stars early before, but I am only three techs away and looking hard at the option.

One thing I noticed. The minor's STOPPED buying when they ran low on dough, and started up again when they saved a new bankroll (over 800bc). I wonder if the fact that I was the first one each of them met had anything to do with it. Or... that none were paying any tribute at the time. When they are paying out tribute, to anybody, that seems to put the brakes on their spending.

Congrats to the FotR for 3 million.

Theoden, you downplay your large maso win of 32k but that is really good. Remember those days not too long ago when the cap was 30k? How soon we forget. .

Cotal Ginata - thank you for the very helpful response . . . and on my own empire's thread. Wow!!! Now that's service.

Sirian, we all need to play Gal Civ in the way that is most fun for us. If we all have fun, we play more, recruit others to buy Gal Civ, and might just keep those new versions coming. Personally, I find it appalling (he said in jest) that anyone would use military in such a fun diplomacy game. Such a waste . . . but what the heck. Just have fun.

#599  by Citizen musicfan55 - 11/15/2003 11:33:45 AM

Here is one reason it is fun to play evil with all pure evil opponents. At the time I was morality 19 and the AIs were all demonic. The Torians dropped in to say:

"We are both evil. We understand that. But the Drengin Empire . . . well they are not evil. And that's a problem for us. They are a threat to our torture-loving ways. We must act together to ensure that the galaxy is filled with misery and pain as it should be."

Well since the Drengin were demonic, it was a little confusing but either way it was very funny to have the Torians say this. Darn near fell out of my chair LMAO. .
