The Journey- Part 3

Jedi
“Oww Some one get the number of that freighter.” groaned the bat. “Whoa. Something smells like well cooked leather. Hope it’s not me”
“Groan” came another complaint from the view screen “I’d say from first pain experience that life is not the best option.”
The form slumped down into darkness again.
Outside the cooling craft 18 small shapes weaved a complicated dance around the wrecked ship. Where one would stop for a moment a small flash could be seen.
A couple of hour later the shivering bat levered itself up on it wing tips and promptly barfed over the view screen. “Ooww stop the world. I want to get off. And why ‘aint I dead?”.
Silence was the steadfast response.
“Computer?” questioned the bat.
The silence deepened
“Oh sheet.” breathed Bakka “What would MacGyver do now?”
Peeling himself of the view screen he stood and orientated himself to his surroundings.
“Oh fubar!” Bakka exclaimed as he toppled forward to head butted an innocent panel next to the floor.
The assaulted panel responded with an attack of it own. “SCRREEEEEEECHHHHH”
Bakka groaned again and wished his spine would stop trying to jump out his back
“Emergency life support resetting” a slow metallic voice was heard from the panel
“Not so loud” hissed Bakka
As he spoke lights blinked on, things whirred in protest and gizmos that went pop went pop.
“Computer?” Bakka asked a second time.
“Whiz [pause] pop” was the embarrassed reply from the ship
“Oh well. No more arguments for a while. Now Communications is on the survival hit list if I'm thinking straight”
Bakka looked up and saw the communication panel sitting expectantly at the top of the current gravity well.
”Hmm going have to do this the old fashion way” Bakka spread his wings and started on a careful flight path to the waiting panel. Half way up Bakka had a triumphant look on his face when the galaxy decided he had enough success for the moment.
“Wham” went the real floor as Bakka face planted himself downwards
“Warning. Internal stabilizers reinitialising in 3 seconds” a slightly different metallic voice called out.
“I hate this ship!” groaned Bakka “who taught you how to count” he shouted.
To Bakka’s eye not one of the working panels managed to look guilty.
Limping to the Com’s panel he looked in dismay at the damage an orc with a battle axe would be proud off.
Pushing buttons inexpertly and in complete random order Bakka made only on insignificant light lite up.
“Oh great a FM carrier wave”
“Snap crackly scratch” said the FM channel
“I’m sure I haven’t heard that one on the top 100 list” Bakka told the blinking light

“Jedi Republic Starfighter to unknown vessel. Please respond.” A booming voice tried to break Bakka’s ear drums
Reeling from the full blast of the hypertertainment system Bakka scrabbles madly across the floor back to the com’s panel.

“G’day mate. Bakka here. Last of the Freedom force I expect. I really don’t care where you’re FROM, mate, I just need a bleeding PINT! Me esky got melted on the way over here”

Bakka’s Ghost bat senses started to zing at this point.

“Oh shit the undead! You got any beer mate. Really if you can get me some beer I can stop the undead. I’m not jerking your chain. Give me some beer and I can help you with these guys”

The Fighter pilot ignored Bakka’s pleading and took off at full throttle. The Space Station closed in on the two small ships. From the view screen bakka could see the star winking out behind the massive bulk. The station slowed down and purplish beam spread from above one of the massive openings of the space station towards the two ships. Being nearing the smaller Fighter was engulfed and it’s acceleration slowed down. The Star Hawk was stopped dead in it’s cartheeling dance across the stars and immediately dragged towards the gapping hole in the hulk. The Fighter passed the Star Hawk
As it bucked and rolled in the grip of the purple beam under.
“Comon mate you can do it. Break free” breathed Bakka
Out of the corner of his eye Bakka saw something zoom past, towards the massive undead hulk. As he turn to get a bette view he realized what it was. The Micro bot where heading for the source of the devilish beam. All 18 of them fired at the beam projector and it snapped off allowing the fighter to streak out of range. The Micro bots then landed on the hulk. By this stage Bakka couldn’t see what was going on but he had a far idea of what might happen.

Bakka spoke into the com’s panel one last time.
“Mate stay out of range of this thing. They can’t hurt me and I think they are going to get one very very nasty surprise in a couple of hours.”
“That’s a negative!” the reply crackled back
The fighter did a slow circling loop back towards the hulk and lined up for an attack run.
Massive beam projectors open up on the little fighter before it was even half way within range. The Fighter side step every shot with cool precise exact movements.
“Oh wow. Now that is flying. Imagine what he could do in this bucket of loose nuts.”
The fighter was starting to take hits as solid ammunition joined the power weapons.
“Oh strewth mate. Get out of here before they do you” scream Bakka in frustration

Reluctantly the fighter turned from his attack vector and use the speed he had gain to head for sanctuary within the solar system. Bakka’s floundering ship was swallowed whole by the station.
A very destructive and large game of cat and mouse ensured through and round the planets, moons and astroid belts of the system.

5 hours later he fighter was bleeding fuel and its shield was almost totally shorted out, though still in one piece but with fire scaring down one side when equipment had burst into flame when a small astroid had decided to play chicken. Both Pilot and R4 unit enjoyed a minutes rest from the intensive pressure of the last five hours.

“[hiss..crackle] –You still alive mate” came the completely calm voice of Bakka “You can come out now. The undead are gone. No need for radio silence. They have gone. Seems like they swallowed more then they could chew.”
A silent pause that only space can produce.
“My sensors are coming online and I can see another ship heading towards the system. I’m guessing the Zombies bugged out when it detected the ship. My Micro Bots had done a lot of damage to the weapons. I bet they number in the thousands now”
The pilot turned to the R4 unit sitting outside the cockpit and said “What you think? I can’t feel the dark force anymore.”
“beep de beep whistle”
“You are too trusting R4”
Thumbing the retro thrust the fighter scooted backwards away from the astroid it was hiding behind and steered a course along the line of the signal.
“Hi mate. Glad to see a friendly face in these parts once in a while. Bloody good flying. Wish I had half the skill you had.”
The constant chatter over the carrier wave guided the fighter towards the stricken Star Hawk.

As the fighter got closer he could see a moving sphere of objects spinning around the ship. Acting like a shoal of fish the Micro bots made a passage way for the fighter as it closed in on the Star hawk.
“What are these Micro Bots you keep talking about” ask the bemused Jedi. “they act alive but I don’t feel a life force”
“Mate, Your guess is as good as mine. I only just come across them recently and already they have helped me out of three pickles. I’m guessing that they are some type or Precursors technology”
“Precurse?” question the Jedi
“oh man you don’t know about the Precursors. Get me back to a base fix me ‘puter and it will tell you all about it”
“Done.” replied the Jedi “I’m Obi Wan Kenobi of the Jedi Republic. We will need to wait for that other ship to tow you though”
“Cool dude. Friends of yours I take it.” responded Bakka with relief and sadness. “I’m Bakka of the Freedom force. Though I expect, the only one now”
The Frigate came up shortly and with the fighter as escort the trio of ships headed for Coruscant

The Journey- Part 4

Jumping out of Hyperwarp, the trio of ships, one damaged Star Hawk, assisted by a JR hyperspace unit, closed in on Coruscant.

"So, this is where you hail from?" Bakka asked michivieously.

"Something like that.." Kenobi responded, aware of his humorous tone.

Over the com channel suddenly came to life.

"Republic ships, please transmit your docking codes. Unidentified ship, state you buisness on Coruscant." The impersonal voice of the docking technician commanded of all of them.

"This is Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, I am bringing this ship to the surface for repairs on official Council buisness. I'm transmitting the docking codes now."

A somewhat long pause followed, the hidden surface of Coruscant grew larger and larger as they approched.

"Codes recieved you are clear for landing on docking pad #573 and maintentence bay #3. Have a nice day."

With that the large frieghter towing the Star Hawn fired its reentry engines and towed the reletivly small ship into the atmosphere.

"Meet me in the Jedi Council building once you land. You can't miss it..." Kenobi instructed of Bakka.

Once the ships had safely landed, bakka wrestled his way out of his ship. Still weary from the events of the last few hours, he gave off the appearance of a drunkard. Slowly making following the signs to the Jedi Council, he started to get used to being on a planet. He hadn't felt true gravity since he fled his homeworld.

"Ah, there you are! Come, the Council wishes an audiance with you." Kenobi said as he approched from his Jedi Starfighter.

The Council building truly was magnificent, a temple in the sky, it peered out over the high skyline of Coruscant. Upon reaching the Council chambers, Kenobi introduced Bakka to the Jedi Masters.

"Hello, Bakka, glad we could help you I am. A daring rescue that was, Kenobi, yes.. Well, repair you ship we will. How can we assist you further Bakka?"

The Journey- Part 5

Mercenary

“G’day mate. Nice digs you got here.” Bakka’s colloquialism rescued him from a potential moment of speechlessness.
Yoda followed Bakka’s line of sight out the window and nodded knowingly, “Good, view is. Cost much, insurance does”
Bakka swallowed nervously as he turned to the senate members of the Jedi Council, “You would fix my ship up, just like that?”
As one the Jedi masters smiled and Yoda nodded and spoke. ”Jedi code, you not know. Require help, need not ask for.”
“Hmm like the unspoken law of the outback” mused Bakka. “I promised Obi here all I know of Precurser. But that is not a fair trade for repairing my ship.”
“A fair trade is not required here, Bakka” Count Dooku interrupted “You have done the same for others, yes?”
“I believe Bakka will not accept this proposal as it stands.” Obi stated to the council.
Bakka open his jaw to reply but was interrupted again as Obi turn back to Bakka
“We require access to the Micro Bot technology for payment for your rescue” Obi stated.
Bakka raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Continue.”
“You ship has self repairing technology. We will fully repair you ship for that.” Obi counted off the second point, “Restock of you ship for all you information about other empires in this Metaverse”
“Done” replied Bakka through a big grin. “Though there is one thing more I would like to ask”
“Yes” queried Obi
“Teach me to fly like you did against the undead”
The council room went silent as the Jedi council sat back and contemplated the request. Bakka looked around the room in alarm. Yoda appear to be concentration on the floor at Bakka’s feet. Eventually he lookup at Bakka and shook his head
“You not, force touch” came the cryptic reply. “Force, not need you do”
“Um connection between fighter training and force is?” Bakka asked
Qui Gon Jinn stirred “The Force allows Jedi to see the future and this ally we use when flying. Master Yoda determines all who is trained.”
Bakka looked down cast for a moment but looked up with a smile. “Oh well. I expect if I want to find those responsible for Freedom Forces destruction I will not have time to stay for training.”
Yoda looked up at these words and replied. “Future I see, but no destiny for you. Strange yes”
Obi Wan Kenobi stood and placed a hand on Bakka shoulder “Master Yoda does the dark side cloud his destiny?”
Yoda look disappointed at Obi’s question, “See this, you can Obi wan Kenobi. Tell you, I need not”
Sephlock was softly speaking into a terminal during most of the later discussion and now he raised his voice “We have very little information on Freedom force but what we had spoke of great things. Our friends of the Fellowship know more. Go to them for they can help you.”
“Thank you” Bakka replied softly

Days later Bakka and Obi Wan Kenobi walked to the newly polished Star Hawk sitting pretty in complete readiness.
“A very remarkable ship you have here Bakka.” Obi gestured towards the docking clamps and they fell away.
“A prototype actually. Still with some bugs and a major virus in the computer core” responded Bakka
“I heard that Captain” a metallic voice boomed from the ship
“Shut up you bucket of outdated silicon chips” yell Bakka while winking at Obi
“I can reliable inform you Captain I do not have any sand in my circuits.” the metallic voice raise in pitch
“You sure? Even after these repairs? I’m sure I saw some silicon chips in a R4 unit being repair the other day” Bakka delivered the fast come back
“Whiz hiss Pop”
“I think I got it there for once.” Bakka said to Obi “When you go to war?”
Obi Wan Kenobi pretended to looked shocked for a second and then looked around “That obvious is it? Well that makes it a little easier to ask a small task of you”
“Anything mate” the grinning bat responded.
“We would like you to deliver these messages to the Fellowship of the Rings. Allow no other to see them.”
“No worries mate. Will do.” Bakka grinned even wider. “Wanna come inside. Got a surprise for you”
Obi concentrated on the grinning bat trying to read Bakka’s intensions. Shrugging his shoulders he stepped into the ship. Bakka quickly followed.
“Welcome to my abode.”
“Computer!” spoke Bakka
“Available”
“Bet you say that to all the docking ‘puters. Initiate contact with Jedi Council main core stack.” continued Bakka
Obi gasped in surprise and started to reach for his communicator.
“And download complete schematics of the Star Hawk and all relevant sciences.” finished Bakka with an evil grin
“Authorize?”
“Authorize it yourself “
“Affirmative. Download complete” the metallic voice smirked
“Why?” ask Obi
“In payment for the next question I’m going to ask.”
“Which is?
“How many Toyoda jokes have you really made?” whispered Bakka
Obi almost smiled as he considered the bat
“Get out of here you demonic bat” he laughed and left the ship.

The Last of the Freedom Fighters.

It has a nice ring to it, bakka.

We welcome you to the Fellowship thread for your next Journey.

A few seconds later...

The Freedom Force Avatar's engines began to wind up with a deep-throated rumble that contrasted sharply with the high-pitched whines of Coruscant's normal air traffic. The rumble was almost loud enough to drown out the sound of a banging on the outer hatch. Almost.

With a grumble, Bakka yelled out, "Hey, Computer?"

"What do you want this time?"

"Somebody wants in. Hold the engines and open the door!"

"Turn on the engines. Turn off the engines. Open the door. Close the door. Water the rhododendrons. Brew me a pot of tea..."

The hatch hissed open, and Obi-Wan stepped onto the deck. He glanced around sheepishly, despite the fact that Bakka was clearly the only sentient in view. He was clearly holding something behind his back. "Hey, 'mate.' Didn't want you to leave without first...well...I knew Yoda wouldn't approve..."

"Spit it out, man!"

The Knight shifted his weight uncomfortably from one foot to the other. "Well, those micro-bots of yours could have been working on patching up your ship instead of keeping that undead war-wagon busy. And if your ship was fixed, you couldv'e taken off pretty quickly. That would've left me in a pretty uncomfortable position, Force or no Force.

"So, I thought I'd return a favor or two. You did ask for a pint, didn't you?"

Obi-Wan brought out the package from behind his back - a 6-pack of Foster's. "It's not much," he explained sheepishly. "KitWarrior left it behind the last time he visited the Jedi Council to train one of our 'dark-siders.' He doesn't think Coruscant beer is worth stealing and usually brings his own."

Bakka smiled. Seeing an oversized bat smile sometimes sends a confusing signal; it's not what one usually associates with a happy face. Fortunately, Obi-Wan's sensitivity to the Force allowed him to figure out the intention.

"Thanks. By the way, what's up with the war preparations and training 'Dark Siders?' Thought you Jedi were big on peaceful co-existence?"

Obi-Wan sighed. "Master Yoda has foreseen the future - well, one POSSIBLE future, anyway. A great War is coming - The War of the Worlds - and we must be ready. Yoda has us doing calisthenics at 4:00 AM, and anyone who can use the Force will be needed for the fight. Which brings up another point.

"You're going to be in dangerous places ahead. I'm not Yoda, but even I can see that much. You may not always be in this fantastic ship, or out in space where those bots can help you. If you're in a tight spot on the ground, this might come in handy."

Obi-Wan tossed the surprised bat a lightsaber.

"It used to belong to my apprentice, but he kept losing it. He's working on a new one now - says he likes red better. Anyway, thought you could use it."

"Thanks, mate!" Bakka exclaimed. He depressed a button on the ergonomic handle. The brilliant beam of light popping out of the end of the saber nearly hit him in the ear. Fortunately, it harmlessly punched into one of the subwoofers for the sound system.

"HEY!" complained the computer. Bakka noticed that, restricted to tweeter and midrange, the computer voice sounded more whiny than smug.

"Er...you might want to work on your swordplay a bit..." murmured Obi-Wan, as he quickly backed up toward the open hatch. "Happy trails!"

As a Senator, I note that Yoda is slipping in his administrative duties. A few notes are in order here:

Welcome to our newest member, Admiral Sherbert! It's nice to see somebody volunteer for the job of Imperial Fleet Commander while the guys with the lightsabers are out hacking away at people (and while Tarkin sniffs around looking for traces of Gerakken).

Congrats to StBlasius on yet another promotion - to Diplomat! Two promotions in one week...Master Yoda, I recommend that StBlasius be appointed to the Council. His role in the Metaverse is clearly expanding with his scorekeeping programs, etc. and his wisdom would be of much value in matters of state.

And congratulations to all Jedi for your recent submissions that have lifted the Republic past the ANZACS and into seventh place in the Metaverse.

May the Force be with y'all.

#160  by Veteran Jedi_Master_Yoda - 8/1/2003 12:52:20 AM

What? All that happen in the last hours, except StBlasius's upgrades, which I find very interesting! All the other things you mentioned are new developments, thanks for pointing them out..

As for the upgrade to the Council, we must keep our roster numbers... strict limit at 8 members, unless you would like to put an extridition order up for a vote...

I'm hoping to finish work early so I can get a good one in before I go out of town this weekend. But the good news is that my boss is on vacation next week and I will be 'working in the lab' all week.

OT: What, in your opinion, is the best LCD flat panel monitor for gaming in the 17" $800 and below range. The misses really wants one but I keep putting her off because I hear they are not good for gaming. Thanks for any help you might offer.

Count Dooku,

I have an LCD flat panel monitor and it is not good for gaming since the resolution is limited.cf I don't play games that need a high refresh rate, but I've heard that doesn't work well.

The lack of resolution bothers me in other circumstances as well. If fact, my 21" CRT monitor is still at my workstation and the flat panel is in my office for when I need to the desk space...

My LCD flatpanel is a couple of years old so I don't know how much they have improved..

Use a Sony, 17" flat panel LCD monitor I do. It's max resolusion is 1025*768, which is standard, but anything over that and you can't get it to display. Other than that, the clarity is incredible, and, a plus for us long screen-starers, NO RADIATION!

Master Yoda,

Do you play FPS, RTS, ect types games (with lots of action)?

- Count Dooku

#165  by Veteran Jedi_Master_Yoda - 8/1/2003 6:49:54 PM

Do you play FPS, RTS

Yes, in fact that is what I would call my "Norm". Galciv is the exception not the rule. I typically dislike TBS style games.

#166  by Citizen Monkson - 8/1/2003 11:52:57 PM

Just finished my game I started today and it will be the last time I get to play for a while I think.

What do you guys think about more planetary statistics? Example, if you take over a planet, how many humans and the race of the civ you took over. Any kinds of modifiers for a planet that has more humans that aliens or vice versa; maybe shipping some humans to your planet to start a good human base. Anyway, it is probably too much management and detail, plus I am tired as hell.

Good night all you fellow Jedi's and keep posting your scores since we are not that far behind #6.

#167  by Citizen Wild Wombat - 8/1/2003 11:59:26 PM

Count Dooku

I'm with CypherPax on the monitor. The old cathode ray tubes are still best for FPS with that spanking video card I'm sure you've got. I did think that LCDs are FIXED resolution, although Yoda's comment has me a little confused. I use an LCD at work - fixed 1024x768. And the cathodes are cheaper - you could afford a 19 inch for the same price as a 17 inch LCD!

I'm honored that you would like me to be in the Council, but I have never had an interest in any title or position in the group. When I joined this empire, it was to liven up my GalCiv playing and to get involved in something. I can still do what I've been doing without being a Senator The change to Veteran happened after I helped people solve some of their problems, and then I was a Diplomat after I suggested writing a program to calculate Metaverse scores. Lots of people on this forum have done much more than I, but thank you very much for the kind words

BTW I still haven't decided if I'm going to write that scoring program, does anyone have any reasonable ideas for a program/utility that you would like for GalCiv?
