i have had some time to play with Dark Rain (excellent)suite of tools and here is the result http://www.freewebs.com/guildshand/tiles.htm Link

one replacement set of tiles for the star background ingame. give it a try. its just the first version, we'll have to see what comes next.

Instructions:
download the file, backup the original Space01 in the gfx folder, unzip the downloaded file to the gfx folder and over write the existing one, start your game.

Cool, that's really nice! I prefer the less busy one. And thanks for the small tutorial on your site too

You can get the less busy one from the library now. as a side note, the file should work in the gfx/mods folder now.
enjoy

I'm using the less busy one as backgroud and like it very much. I also use your star animations, which i like even more (hope you get that little bug near the pulsars straightened out, but so far this no real 'bug' for me). I personally would prefer an even less busy starfield, as the during my first time uses it seemed to me still a little too much stars and stuff on the screen. By now i got used to this, though. I switched back to the initial background for a short time, but once one has seen your version, the original one becomes quite boring. So i switched back to your mod and am still happy with it.

All in all i believe your mods are the best gfx-mods currently available.

Great work on the background.

Btw, did you know that you can create animated backgrounds if you change the name correctly? Also, you don't have to use one that has the same size except if you want it to work in the mod folders and I'm not even sure there.

Animated backgrounds, that would be cool. would you happen to have an example(or pointers) of a file name to accomplish that? I think i'd like to give it a try sometime.

Thanks for the info
