"The art files are included so you can use the toolset to change this .spr1 file to replace any other ship you want."

How exactly can i do this (I'm fairly new with the Editing Suite)?

sorry that I reply late here. was only checking the Galciv Editing Suit - thread regularly and not looking over the board. ^^

basically you first need to know what ship you want to replace.

then you go into your X:\...\Galactic Civilizations\data directory and open the .ship files with a text editor like notepad.

Some ships are packed into an archive. some have their own files. For instance the most basic ships are in CoreShips.ship while the Death Knight and Excalibur are on their own.

for replacing art you need the .ship data only to know what name the ship you want to replace has internal for the game.

For instance from CoreShip.ship:
//------------------------------------------------------------------------
SHIP Battleship
//------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name "Battleship"
Model "Ship11"
Description "A powerful ship for striking fear in the eyes of the enemy."

HitPoints 50
Attack 9
Defense 4
Speed 0
Cost 500
SensorRange 3
Tech_Requirement "Battleship1"
Maintenance 12
Range 0
Weapon "Photon"
ENDSHIP

Here you see that in the CoreShips the Battleship is ship11.

Now that you know that you open the .mdl (gfx folder)file that matches the name of the .ship file. In this example coreships.mdl.

For this you need WinPack from Dark Rains Editing Suit.

There you find entries for every ship type for every race and a palette file each too.

We want the Battleship so its ship11. You will find:
0ship11.spr1
1ship11.spr1
2ship11.spr1
3ship11.spr1
4ship11.spr1
5ship11.spr1

+ the palletes for each. The first number tells you the race of the ship. 0 are humans, 1 Drengin, 2 Altarian, 3 Arcean, 4 Torian and 5 are the minor civs.

Pick your race and extract the .spr1 and the PAL_ file.

with the sprite editor from the editing suit you can now open the .spr1 file. You need to replace all entries in there (120*120 picture, 1 or 2 24*24 pictures and the 64*(64*32) rotated strip). See Dark Rains tutorial for using the sprite editor for details.

When you are done simply add the new spr1 to the .mdl (and overwrite the old one). Dont forget to make a backup (I usually copy the .mdl in the mods folder and do all editing with that only).

As mentioned an .spr1 file can contain 3 OR 4 parts (some ships have 2 small icons, some only 1).

If the ship I moded has the same number of entries it should be possible to just open the .mdl from my mod and extract the moded .spr1.

Then rename it (and rename the entries with the sprite editor) to match it with the names of the .spr1 of the ship you want it to replace. then put it in the approbriate .mdl.

hope that was not too confusing.

you should really read the tutorial by Dark Rain. Its pretty good.
