I get the feeling they're zipped up in some weird file. Any way to mod them? Thanks,

I belienve that all the images that are related to "game play" are in the .mdl files.
Stardock will be releasing a editor for these file soon.

JUst to be clear it don't think they will have an editor for the .mdl files but there will be a way to create .mdl files with your own images

Any idea what the .mdl files are? Looking at them in a hex editor they seem to be a collection of sprites (bitmaps?), but I get the feeling they are a special file format specific to GalCiv and not something normally seen in other games.
I would love to take them apart and look at the individual sprites

Thanks for the responses.

This sounds less flexible than editing existing mdl's. What if you just want to change one or two things and leave the rest as it is? Ah well, I guess we'll find out when we get there...

The mdl files are for the ships, anomalies, stars, etc. They're animated models. The file format includes the bitmaps and information about the number of frames, animation name, etc.
There's a link up in a sticky thread for a ship encoder now. We may be expanding it to encode the other objects as well. It's a modified version of the program that we use to encode our graphics, to skip a bunch of the steps that we have to go through.
The interface files are saved as mtd files. They're rather more complicated to make and we don't have a program like SkinStudio for our interface. It's an extreme PITA to create a screen, even if you know photoshop well.
