Once again I come begging for gifts...
I know you are overworked and underpaid (heh), but please consider adding the following entries to English.str instead of hardcoded for us fanatical modders:
[Sol] Sol
[Earth] Earth
[Mars] Mars
[Saturn] Saturn
[Alexians] Alexians
[Carinoids] Carinoids
[Scottlingas] Scottlingas
[Kwilasians] Kwilasians
[Sanderons] Sanderons
[USS Discovery] USS Discovery
[USS Hero] USS Hero
Thanks so much (oh and if it helps - Brad You Rock! )

Oh and...
[Jan] Jan
[Feb] Feb

I know, I know... I just keep asking and asking...
Thanks Brad for considering it. Changes like these really give Galactic Civilizations a loooong and fun life!

Thank you Cari.

Actually I liked the developers name in there. But of course flexability in naming is always good.

First person to make a Klingon.str gets a free "The Trouble With Tribbles" coloring-in book
... and the first person to make a Sindarin.str gets a whack in the face with a haddock for Going Too Far.

! Well, actually right now it's hardcoded to look for english.str. That's easily changed, though.

Also - I was surprised to find that Mitrosoft, etc, all are not in the English.str file can I beg for those as well Cari?
...and I tried changing all of the references of bc to mc (mega credits) in the English.str file and bc still showed up in a few places:
All of the Mitrosoft, etc. offers have amounts in bc
Domestic Policy screen, economics tab - all references are still in bc
Foriegn policy, stats tab under misc. - still shows bc
A reallly minor thing, but I thought I would mention it.
Thanks!!!!!!

Yoink! ...and yet another misnomer:
I changed Survey Ships to Sensor Ships and Constructors to Engineering Ships, but the planet list still shows SurveyShip and Constructor... I wonder if the improvements are also hard coded like this (Soil Enhancement, News Network, etc.)???
Also I wonder what will happen if I create a new ship entirely? Will it show the correct name in the planet list??? (Guess I will have to go experiment and find out!)
Finally I noticed that the enemy ship naming conventions are hard coded as well. I.E. I changed BattleAxe to Frigate and enemy races still name them BattleAxe022 etc. Any way you could add this to the English.str as well (I know, I know... sorry [sheepish grin] )

I have found a couple more things not in the english.str that I would like to request. Perhaps we should make a nice neat list that we can point to for the devs' reference...

Neither are. Change both the header and the name in the original file and it should work. Same with the naming convertion. The SHIP header is where it derives that from.

Thanks Arturus, that was indeed the problem!
Unfortunately I submit that this is a bug for the following reasons:
1) Headers in .ship files can't have spaces in them and it looks a little silly in the planet list to be building a SurveyShip instead of a Survey Ship
and
2) Changing the core ships causes a crash to desktop (CTD) so there is definately hard coding in there. I suspect the game is trying to give each race it's free surveyship and colonyship at startup and if it can't find those in the .ship files it barfs
Dvelopers - any chance of pulling the planet list names from the ship title as opposed to it's header... and... any possibility of adding some flags to English.str or Prefs.ini or another file where you can designate startup (free) ships and amounts of ships for each player? As always THANKS!!!

I'll change the planet list to use the displayname.
And yes, there are places where it's hardcoded to use the header names to create ships.
I don't think that we would let you change the starting ships for game balance reasons. But I will add it to my list to bring up when we're talking about new features.

Thanks Cari! Let me state (again) what an AWESOME job you guys are doing with adding new fetures and taking customer suggestions into consideration!
Now you said:
"I don't think that we would let you change the starting ships for game balance reasons."
I noticed that you stated in the the political party thread that you might be changing that code as well for game balance reasons...
I don't mean to be rude (I don't! Really!), but what "game balance" are you worried about? This game is not multiplayer and as I understand it modified games can't be submitted to the multiverse so...
Really the only game balance that could be "ruined" is by the person who makes the modification or downloads and tries someone elses mod. Even at that, the mods hosted here are checked out before they are posted to allow others to download them.
I think taking control away... any control... is bad.
Here's a good example of why I might want full access to the political parties - Maybe I feel like research progresses too slowly in the game so I mod a file that accelerates research (like modding all the political party files across the board to give +50% research).
Equally changing starting ships could make some pretty interesting scenarios... mass expansion (3 colony ships each), pirates & privateers (1 colony, 1 freighter, 1 corvette, 1 scout), the great war! (tons of cruisers, destroyers and even a battle ship), etc.
Remember mods are just that - "mod"-ifications of the base game. They are meant to look different, feel different, and even play different!
Anyway that's my 2 cents. I want as much control as the game will allow
Thanks for listening
