I responded to Ceyan briefly the other day about his desire for playable senerios. And I gave it a little thought.
I would be interested in what you guys and gals think about this.
I feel senerios could be done with GalCiv; with maybe a little code changing or maybe no code change. And I plan to look into it at a later date. By then someone might already have a senerio builer finished by then. I am not a programer. So I am a novice at this. I would suspect something along these lines would need to be done.
You download, and load a MOD & MATCHING SAVEGAME. This has the set up of AI already populated a curtain amount and the MORALITY INTELLEGENCE is told to the player. This save game simply being a game played up to the desirable situation is in place. The mission would not be the normal mission win goals but to simply achieve curtain task. Most likely to help a loosing GOOD AI out of a almost impossible situation. BIK videos could be triggered for the start and end of the senerio. The BIKs already in the game could be triggered. Or the MOD could supply it's own.
A. 100 % chance EVENT happens at turn 1. Setup BIK is displayed.
B. 100 % chance EVENT happens at turn 15. Etc.
C. 100 % chance EVENT happens at turn 25 ONLY IF TASK is accomplished.
D. 100 % chance EVENT happens at turn 26 ONLY IF TASK is NOT accomplished.
A. - D. Type events exicuted along simular path.
Y. - Z. Same as C & D except final prose and end BIK for success or failure.
I dig side quests, but it probaly wouldn't BBQ my pancake on this one.. Besides, they'd have to overhaul the AI to balance this new feature out. I don't see it as practical. But then again the modding community never really let that stop them..
I like the thought of it... and I think it would definitely be possible to a certain degree as the game stands now. If using a MOD launcher or similar app you could tell GalCiv to select only .events that you have created for the MOD. renaming the races and the terran alliance, and inserting a decent backstory shouldn't be an issue.
the hardest part I would think, would be making the AI behave a certain way. I guess unless the behaviour is specifically editable then it would be relatively hard to force it to do certain things, even if they are within its normal behaviour...
