Stardockers,

Would it be possible to put up a copy of the galciv\Data directory (not including SaveGames, of course) in the Library? It would be very handy to have a standard version available for those of us who may have done extensive mod testing, but who may not have taken extensive precautions (Is this the backup from 1.01? Wait, this GCTech.TECH has one of mine in it...).

I'm assuming you don't want test games submitted to the Metaverse, but for me that could mean reinstalling in order to KNOW I've got the standard files. Of course, it wouldn't be the only lesson I've learned the hard way.

I know this is the responsibility of the user, but it would be a nice gesture and it only takes up 600 - 700 kb of space.

End transmission.

The easiest way to avoid this is to simply not use the standard files at all. The stuff I've been poking at (but haven't had time to finish due to oncoming final exams *glares at college*) are all in other .TECH, .IMP, and .SBMOD files. Develop everything elsewhere, and just rename GCTech.TECH to GCTech.TECH.bak (and likewise with the others) or something if you need to remove the old ones to test a total conversion mod.

This does still leave English.STR, but I think that and stars.lst the only ones hard-coded to a specific filename.

Arturus,

I agree, sort of. Unfortunately, I subdivided GCTech.TECH and renumbered all the techs to fit the tech tree (as posted on JavaScout's page) in a fit of anal-retentive-style Modding. Right now, I've got 3 (or 4?) versions of GCTech.TECH in 4 (or 5?) different directories. If I had been thinking straight (pause for small happy-foot dance, as final term paper went in last Thursday), I would have set up a mirror directory complete with backup for testing. I did something just as drastic with Coreships.SHIP. Although it hasn't been in the news for some years, I am still on my quest for the title of "World's Stupidest Man."

I'm on cable, so I can always uninstall and re-install to get a clean set up; I was just thinking it would be so much easier to download a clean copy of the \galciv\Data directory. That way other genius-level hackers, like moi, would have a quick fix when they find out that the Latin root of "genius" means "ill-planned; poorly thought out; possibly drug-addled".

I've already got a partially revised copy of Stars.LST, and when I get around to rewriting English.STR again I'll keep a backup of that one, too.

End transmission.
