I never could figure out why the Drengin ships are green and not red.

Duglis, if you are still downloading the beta versions of the Writer, you can do this in about 10 seconds. Just open the Writer, go to the Ships editing screen, go to Corvette, change the Model from Corvette to Starhawk/Frigate, and do the opposite for Frigate (Model = Corvette). Save and write to files, you're done.

I think I could do this (Drengin ships red), but it would be H-A-R-D... I'm talking ninja level hacking and a TON of work. I experimented last night with this some, but need to do some more experiments tonight.
I would hate to do all of this work only to find out that the devs are willing to do it for free.
Cari (or Scott or Brad or Alex? ) - any chance you guys would consider releasing a red color Drengin set OR would you be willing to release a pcx, or other formats, of the Drengin ships??? (preferably on solid black with no stars... angle doesn't matter but facing north would be best)
If I could get at a raw shot of the ships it would cut my development time by about 30% (the rest of the time being spent in photoshop recoloring and rotating / filmstriping them for the ship editor)

Duglis:
>I hope you get help. I woudn't want you to overburden yourself,
Thanks Doug. It kind of goes with my "super secret project" hehe It's something that I don't really *need* to do, but it would be a nice optional element... and I agree that the Drengin ships should probably have been red to begin with.
I'll think it over some more and do some more experimenting.
pdifolco:
>As for coloring models it should take 15 seconds with the base tga available, with any graphics program,
>but if you have to build one from screenshots it's a pain...
I don't know about *any* graphics program... some ar ea LOT easier to do recoloring with then others! Photoshop has a lot of functions to do this quickly and easily (color replace, hue/saturation layers, alpha channels, etc.), but yeah your point is exactly what I'm getting at - with the raw files it would take a lot less time.
The bulk of the project involves other stuff though - cropping, rotating, filmstripping, encoding... thank goodness there are a couple of utility programs already designed for this (ship rotater & ship encoder), but it's still tedious work
Plus my personal interpretation of the Drengin red shading may be too red for some or not red enough for others, etc. etc.

Hey Duglis... I'm going to sit tight for another day. I shot an email to Cari and want to give her a chance to get into work and read it.
One way or another I am definately doing the super secret project! ...in fact I made enourmous success this weekend on it and I'm pleased as punch. With any luck it will be the first real conversion mod put out for GalCiv!
I learned a lot this weekend about the files and how they load and are referenced in the game... really good stuff. Still have no idea how to extract or compile the targa files into .mdl files though
Thank the precursors for the ship compiler or we would be doomed!
Unfortunately my wife was less than pleased at all the time I put into my little project
So for the recolor project I am still mulling it over, but it will be at least a week until I can do anything with it if I decide to go for it... unless somebody else wants to champion the cause

FYI - working on this... it's a laborous process though. MUCH worse than it sounds on forum...
Had a hard time with recoloring... a lot harder then I thought I would. Going from green to a deep red is not as easy as one would think
I fought between a blazing hot and bright orange-red and a deep murky dark-coagulated-psycho-shower-scene-blood red... finally I settled in the middle. I like it... opinions may (no actually they WILL) vary.
So far I have tried out the Drengin Colony Ship and Transport. I also have colored the primary small & basic ships - survey, scout, sensor, defender, starfighter, corvette, battle hammer, and battle axe.
There are technical details to iron out as well, you can't just use these in place of the current .mdl files, but I'm working on that too.
As soon as I have something resembling complete I'll be asking for volunteers to put thier GalCiv at risk with this new Drengin experiments... muwahaha
FYI - I will in all likelyhood NOT being doing any other recolor projects! If you are planning on doing a recolor project let me know - I can offer some useful advice to help you!
More when I have it to report!

Whew! Well all of the Drengin ships are finally recolored and ready for beta testing.
Here's a screencap: Link
If you're interested in beta testing and willing to play a zillion games to observe the Drengin ships and if they move correctly, have all of thier icons, etc. then drop me an email (you can email me from my profile at the CDG site)
Thanks!

you can probably reduce that to a quarter zillion games by removing all the races but the drengin at the race intel and alignment pick screen (just click the race picture and they disappear)
btw, the screencap link goes to a forum. i see no pics
