CariELF said it would take something like hundreds of hours of render time to make all of the angles for each ship 
Maybe for GalCiv 2, but no joy for this one.
Oh well... I for one don't mind top down graphics all that much. The graphics for GalCiv have been complained about by reviewers since it's release, which I think is just insane! The graphics are great!!! Unfortunately these days a game is not considered "good" unless it's rendered in 3D and requires a 128 meg accelerator card

Ahh... I got ya. You could just mirror the image if the ship was moving left or right (still need some kind of direction indicator).
Still a lot of renders tho'
Lets see 20 some ships times 5 major races & the minor race set... Someone would have to do over 100 renders!
Don't get me wrong - I think it would look cool! But it is a lot of work on the artist.
