A Dune Mod....

I wonder how hard it would be to create a Dune Mod for GalCiv?

I can already imagine converting the Drengin into the Harkonnen... Making the U.P. the Imperial Council... or perhaps C.H.O.A.M.? The crazy thing would be getting a consistent storyline happening rather than just a free-for-all trying to claim 'Dune' which would be a Class 50 planet or sumsuch... Perhaps a certain segment of the Dune saga could be portrayed?

Just a Thought, I might have a go sometime.

It sounds interesting one to try. I did not follow the whole dune sega but it is a classic. One of the staff members at my website was thinking about doing the same thing. To bad he is back to his first love, civ3 modding. The storyline would be a problem since they do not provide us with scenario tools yet. Making a Dune mod would be an epic sort of under taking I would say. Be many things to change in the game to match the Dune movie. Good luck, if you ever need a home for your Dune project stop in to CDG we will set you up forums. Really love the idea I hope you pursue it.

i'd love to see this.
in my game, i've renamed the factions
spacing guild (torian), harkonnen (drengin), corrino (altarian), ixians (yor), tleilaxu (arcean).
somehow it always boils down to a scrap between me, the tleilaxu, and the spacing guild.
dirty tleilaxu

Sounds cool David...

I was thinking about this today.. and there are a couple of issues that I can see.

The first would be that more than likely this Mod would have to include a 'Scenario' save game that everyone would have to use... This would be a First turn save but it would have all the planet/star/ship names etc changed. I'll have to explore the options available without using a scenario type concept - I don't like the thought of a scenario type Mod simply because ppl might not like the starting conditions and consequently wouldn't play the game.

The second thing is making use of the Spacing Guild... I would like to change the ships in the game that you build from your planets to be Short Range and very SLOW. UNLESS you made use of the Spacing Guild Heighliners. However there is no way to 'load' ships into another ship (i.e. Cargo Bays) so the easiest way to represent a heighliner would probably be a modifier of some sort that certain ships get maybe if a starbase is present or perhaps a planetary improvement... It weirds me out and I haven't thought of an easy way yet.

I figure that the Padishah Emperor and House Corrino would be a Minor Race in the game... The hard thing is that Minor races don't feature in the U.P. which would actually probably be the Landsraad, and the Emperor does kinda appear in the Landsraad...
Of course I guess you would play as the Atreides - and this wouldn't be an option. Caladan would be the home planet, and Dune would be a random star system you come across... However it would already have 'Spice' which would be a Trade Good giving some crazy advantage to Moral and Economics.

hmmm.. I'm thinking about this alot, but I don't know if I'll do it yet... I might see where GalCiv goes with the Expansion and what modding options come up.

That sounds like it would be a fun mod. If you end up working on it, I hope you keep us updated.

In my humble opinion though, House Corrino should definitly be a major race. They command the entire universe in the first book, that's no minor thing.

The Bene Gesserit, Bene Tleilaxu, Ixians, Ginaz Swordmasters, and maybe even the Honored Matres(late in the game)would make nice minor races in my opinion. They are all powerful and important in the books, but kind of play behind the scenes manipulating things. While the Major Houses and the Spacing Guild are right out there ,in full view, doing their thing.
