ok, i saved some images as pcx files using irfanview freeware. the only other editor i have is ms paint.
but the image shows up messed up. i think it is because it is saved as 24bpp instead of 8bpp. does anyone know how i can change this property?
i don't want to spend any money to do this, so any non freeware suggestions will be a no go.

dang. i had replaced the "error, ship out of range" (the one that pops up when you buy a ship outside your max range) with a cool pic of the cryo sleep chambers from "aliens". but it is the same pic as the "do you wish to change governments?" message. meh, naming it like that and using it for two very different things. bad, stardock, bad.
at least i got to change the upgrade starbase pic without incident.
