Now that ships/sounds/music are pretty much done, I'd really like to add more story/dialogue content to the Star Wars mod. So, if you're non-technical and happen to enjoy the genre, you'd be perfect. And if you got technical skills to boot, yay for you and yay for the mod
So, if you're wondering what kind of things you could write, here are a few categories:
- The various text that the alien leaders send to the player. For example, the well-known "Your skin looks delicious. I'm sure we'll be meeting for dinner soon." Even though that quote is priceless and I'd hate to replace it, there's probably a quote you can come up with that is nearly as funny but more Darth Vader appropriate. There's all sorts of dialogue of this nature that could be changed for the various current Star Wars leaders (Vader, Luke, Yoda, Chewie, and Jabba.)
I don't yet have an exhaustive list of the different events that generate this dialogue, but I hope to soon. If you're curious now, you can look in the English.str file in Galactic Civilization's text directory. You'll see all sorts of categories. From what I understand, Hawaii-50 will soon be expanding his GalCiv Editor to handle the strings file without having to muck around with the raw text.
- Descriptions of Star Wars social upgrades: Choose a social upgrade, galactic wonder or trade good and come up with a Star Wars equivalent. Perhaps Aphrodisiacs should become "Midichlorian Red Dog."
- Renaming and descriptions of Star Wars technology equivalents, for example the obvious TerrorStar -> Death Star. Or how about Planetary Defense -> Ion Defense Cannon, Phaser -> Blasters, etc.
- Events, events and more events: The possibilities are endless here.
Jar Jar has somehow been elected as Minister of the Galactic Economics. It's obvious that this could be disastrous for your empire. Do you
[*] Hold a public execution followed by a month of galactic celebration (+5% economy, +50% morale)
[*] Send bounty hunters to discreetly assasinate him (-5 Alignment)
[*] Do nothing (-20% economy) |
|
Even if you don't feel comfortable testing the events, just coming up with the ideas and writing the dialogue would be a great contribution.
- Descriptions of current ships, as well as developing new ones we could add.
Now, I'm partial to funny Star Wars stuff, but I'm open to whatever you think would be fun. Hell, if it's just fun for you to write it, that's good enough.
The CDG has been gracious enough to host a forum for the mode at Link If you're interested in participating, stop by and send me a note. Or just write some stuff, and post it in the various sections of the forum. I think you can also add attachments to posts if you actually create event files.
- MadMaz
p.s. all the files can now be found there as well as pictures of the ships and, once I finally get back to playing the game, some screenshots.

diplomacy:
Sorry about the mess.
So [terran leader name], we meet again.
It's a wonder you're still alive.
you are my kind of scum. Fearless and inventive.
Greetings, Exalted One.
Don't get all mushy on me
Your overconfidence is your weakness
Your powers are weak, old man
The great [drengin/arcean etc leader]will now listen to your pleas
you slimy piece of worm-ridden filth. you'll get no such pleasure from us.
[StarBaseThreatRejected_1]
I recognized your foul stench when I brought up the vid screen.
There'll be no one to stop us this time.
Charming to the last. You don't how hard I found it signing the order to terminate your life
starbase hand over threat:
if this starbase is a diplomatic outpost, where are the AMBASSADORS?
Don't act so surprised, Your Highness. You weren't on any mercy mission this time.
This is a trade outpost. We're on a diplomatic mission.
race morality/intel descriptions:
we must be cautious...
[Event_UniteAgainstEvil_1]
Travelers report that there is a growing religious movement in the galaxy. This movement is made up of self-confessed 'rebels' whose dream is to wipe out all who follow the "dark side" of the force. They are gaining considerable power among the weak minded in foreign governments. This is something we should probably keep an eye on.
Replace I-League references with "rebel alliance"?
[Destabilize_9]the emperor has dissolved the imperial senate. the last remnant of the old republic is no more.
fear will convince the local systems in line. fear of this terror star!
[CryForHelp_1] help us [terran leader name], you're our only hope!
alliance breaking?
I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further
It's not wise to upset a drengin/human/torian
I suggest a new strategy, human. Let the drengin win
draginol/arnor event
I got a bad feeling about this...

more diplomacy:
We're fine. We're all fine here...now...thank you. How are you?
You should not have come back.
Your cheap jedi mind tricks will not work on me, boy.
You're a fiesty little one, but you'll soon learn some respect
I hope so, [human], for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am
Boring conversation anyway..."
refusing offer:
No reward is worth this!
alliance offer?
Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as [human] and [race1???]
refusing to give in to threat msg:
Look, Your Worshipfulness, let's get one thing straight!!!!!! I take orders from one person! Me!

WOW! Not many people are on board with this project. It is a shame MadMaz did an outstanding job on it. Any additional tweaks are not really needed, but if little things were changed this would be the most Epic sort of Mod of all time IMHO. MadMaz claims to have just put it together over a weekend. If that is true I can imagine how excellent this mod would be then.
I have to admit until CDG hosted his forums for him, I did not really know about this mod. I did tell him we would make forums for the mod, but I just find it hard to try all the cool ones. This is one mod I sure wish I would have tried right away. All galciv lovers owes it to themselves to download and install his mod. Star Wars Conversion Mod Home - > Link

Good ideas, Russell! I actually just noticed them right now. You would think I would have put a watch on a thread that I was trying to get response to, eh?
A good deal of time has passed now, and there seems to be limited interest in this project. Which is fine of course, but I don't think I'm going to throw any more time at it in the near future. But I did copy those quotes, if you don't mind, in case things change and I work on it some more. I did wanna try Hawaii's new Galciv Writer which apparently lets you edit the strings file now.
And, you're right, I should probably still put up some screenshots, though I really haven't been playing the game lately. Hey, Desert, can you help on this?
And btw Mr. Fox, it did take about a weekend Four days if you include the day I uploaded which is probably fair since a million little problems reared their heads that day. But except for the wookies and luke's new dialogue, all the alien leaders were done a couple weeks before that in the 1.0 version. 1.1 were all the ships, intro screens, sounds, and that bloody installer. It probably seems like more than it is.

you might want to post on the main forum too. the mod forum is a bit less popular and i don't even look at the sticky thread titles since there are so many of them that my eyes just race over them. a little advertising can go a long way with galciv mods

It sure does. It even has a synchronization feature that will allow you to compare two files and import the differences. This'll be key as Stardock adds to the English.str file all the time. You'll be able to see what's new and update your file without losing all your hard work.

Not currently, I'm living in San Francisco right now. But I grew up in Hawaii, lived there for 28 years before striking out to find fame and fortune on the Mainland. Actually, I'll pass on the fame and take a double helping of fortune, please.
I don't know why I settled on HawaiiFive-O as my nick, I've been using it for years now. I wanted something that said 'Hawaii' without it being 'Pineapple' or 'Hula' or something like that.

'Pineapple Programmer' !?! Dear god, no!
That's a pet peeve of mine, you know. Growing up in Hawaii, I ate pineapple maybe once or twice a year. But apparently most of the Mainland seems to believe it's a staple food for us. Listen, slapping a piece of pineapple on a breast of chicken does not mean you can call the dish 'Hawaiian Chicken', OK?
Yup, there's DSL/cable Internet in Hawaii. But the economy's lousy. It's been lousy for over a decade now. You know the '90s boom? It skipped Hawaii. Long story short- Hawaii's economy stands on three pillars: tourism, military, agriculture. Agriculture got killed in the '80s by cheap foreign sugar. The 'peace dividend' shrank the amount of military money flowing into the state. Tourism was limping along, hampered by the Tokyo real estate crash (Japanese tourists are huge for Hawaii), when along came 9/11 which just blew the last pillar away. Then every time things start to swing upwards again, we invade a country, or the terror alert goes up, or some crazy viral disease shows up (SARS).
Hawaii is home, and I'll make it back there one day, but I couldn't make a good living there right now.

Papaya, mango, lychee. All good stuff. I miss the food you can get in Hawaii, mostly.
Good for your banker friend, it's a great place to live. I just wanted to get ahead in life, make some money, so when I move back I can afford a house and the good life.
Plus, when you grow up there, you don't really know what you've got until you spend time away from it.
But the Mainland has a lot going for it too.

why not? as my friend told me, a guide told him the ready to eat pineapple will have blond hair, round eyes, and firm bottom...
btw, hawaii i want to dl a copy of your galciv writer but should i get the base 1.0 and then the latest patch or ALL the patches? thanks.

Just 1.0 and the latest, that's all.
