Galactic News Network (GNN)
Sunday, November 30, 2003 - Galactic Civilizations Winter Roadmap

As we start to near the 1 year anniversary of release, here's a road-map of where things are going:

We expect to release Galactic Civilizations 1.12A next week (Friday possibly).

Also in December we hope to release Galactic Civilizations 1.2 though this could possibly get pushed back into January. The major new feature in GalCiv 1.2 is LOGISTICS. A new ability that determines how many starbases you can build. This will require considerable UI and AI work to make happen. 1.2 will be a free update.

In December we will be releasing the first beta of the premium expansion pack: Galactic Civilizations, Altarian Prophecy. This will be available only on Drengin.net. If you don't have Drengin.net you can get it by going to the purchase page and upgrading. Note: Drengin.net is a SUBSCRIPTION service, not a bundle. You get access to all of Stardock's games for 18 months. After that 18 months you would have to renew to continue to get access to new builds. But if you don't renew, you still keep what you have. But let's say Galactic Civilizations II came out in 18 months, you would get GalCiv 2 as part of your Drengin.net subscription but when it expired, you wouldn't continue to get new updates to GalCiv 2 unless you renewed (renewal is expected to be less than $40 for each 18 months, about $2 per month).

That said, if you like strategy games and want to get your hands on our games early, Drengin.net is a really good deal.

Regarding Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy stand-alone, pre-orders on the stand alone have been fairly low. This has more to do with purchasing electronically than anything else. However, it is very unlikely that a stand-alone expansion pack will ever be released at retail. At most, a Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy (full package) will likely be released which would cost more than $19.95 and come out next year but there's no certainty in that.

That said, we will probably trim a handful of the features for the expansion pack. Mainly we'll probably remove the extra ships and events from the planned feature set (we'll be allowing those who pre-ordered to cancel if they wish though I don't think either of those features are germane to the actual coolness of the expansion pack). We'll be updating the expansion pack page shortly to reflect what exactly is in there. But mainly it will be 2 new races plus the map editor, scenario creator, and campaign creator plus the campaign.

From a gameplay point of view, the big deal to GalCiv players should be the map editor and scenario editor because this will allow team games, specific maps, etc. Having 2 more races will enable 4 on 4 games and such or 4 teams of 2 battling it out.

Galactic Civilizations 1.2 will probably be the last major update to the base Galactic Civilizations. The expansion pack version will be called Galactic Civilizations 1.3 and we do plan to release a 1.3x series. If we find some bug and fix that we'll make that available to regular GalCiv players but after February our 1 year development commitment we had promised will have come to pass and it'll be time to begin work on a sequel (which wouldn't be out for a long while).

Which is why we think that Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy is something GalCiv users will really want. From a replayability point of view, it really REALLY will rock.

And the games WILL count in the metaverse but in different categories (there will be a lot of new features in the metaverse coming up in the next several months as the GalCiv II budget kicks in and GalCiv players will automatically benefit).

The updated Metaverse will reward top players, keep monthly, quarterly, and yearly stats, give Empires their own specific awards and medals, provide alternative "Dimensions" to conquer (Stardock will be releasing campaigns whose scores will count in that dimension. Scores in a given dimension will also reflect in the main Metaverse too but will be balanced (i.e. given a bonus factor of some kind).

Winning players and empires of different dimensions will also get additional bonus points that will be factored into the Metaverse itself. We will also accept third party created campaigns that are submitted and are certified by us. Certified campaigns will automatically become a new dimension (though we will probably be stingy on these since we don't want there to be too many nor do we want to take a chance of some empire setting themselves up for an advantage).

Of course, once again, the expansion pack will be important in these since these other dimensions will require the use of campaigns and specific scenarios.

Either way though, the Metaverse will be getting much cooler over the coming year whether you have the expansion pack or not.

We have no ETA on any kind of beta for a GalCiv 2. Probably won't happen for a very long time so don't ask. I can tell you there are 3 big changes we have in mind: 1) Ship Design but done in a way that we think you'll find much cooler than what you've seen before in other games. 2) Colony Design. That's all I'll say about that. and 3) Fleet Battles where fleets are controlled by (wait for it) your logistics. I.e. We think we've solved the age old "Everyone runs around with a mega fleet" problem. These fleets will keep from havign the mega fleet problem while at the same time eliminating the "gazillion" ship issue.

There will not be multiplayer in GalCiv 2. However, Galactic Federations, an RTS that uses the GalCiv 2 engine and has similar game mechanics will be multiplayer and would come out about a year afterwards -- if we do it, everything we say is subject to economic realities of course. And by then, the Metaverse should be powerful enough to combine the best elements of a MMRPG with a multiplayer strategy game. You'll see. ;)

If you have any questions, ask here.

Wow! =)

I think you have a nice phased strategy here to keep faith with existing users while taking on the new frontiers of the expansion pack and a Gal Civ 2.

by Citizen Kevin the Kitten - 11/30/2003 5:00:23 PM
Ok, I have a question. If I were to subscribe to Drengin.net, then I would not only have access to the Gal Civ expansion, but I would also have access to the full versions of all Stardock games (Corporate Machine, Political Machine, etc.), even those yet to be released(i.e. Gal Civ II) provided they come out within the 18 month run of my subscription?

Thanks for the input. Christmas is right around the corner, after all. ;)

by Citizen Michael Brown - 11/30/2003 5:18:54 PM
Damn, seems like I'm gonna have to go looking for a credit card again. Maybe I should start by reading the no credit card required ...

Pre-orders haven't been very good, but what about Drengin.net subscriptions? Haven't they shot up?

by Citizen Fulgrymm - 11/30/2003 6:44:05 PM
[quote]Pre-orders haven't been very good, but what about Drengin.net subscriptions? Haven't they shot up?[quote]

Good Question.

by Citizen Arcilte - 11/30/2003 7:17:30 PM
Re Drengin.net upgrades: They improved but not enough. Most people are taking a wait and see attitude on the expansion pack OR are only willing to buy it at the store.

Re Drengin.net:

When you subscribe to Drengin.net you get ALL Stardock games that are available during that time. When the 18 months are up, access goes away unless you renew but whatever you've downloaded during that time you can keep. But it's up to you to backup whatever you've downloaded if you don't renew.

by Avatar Frogboy - 11/30/2003 7:18:19 PM
I have a perhaps a little unrelated question. Is there any particular reason why you're not allowing downloads of standalone games for people with a Drengin.net subscription, who don't want (or can't) use Stardock Central? Personally, I have a Drengin subscription, but I'm using a more unsupported way of playing the games. I play the games on Linux, in WineX. Unfortunately, Stardock Central does not work, but I'd love to get standalone downloads of the games that are actually available as standalone downloads (Corporate Machine, Galactic Civilizations, etc).

by Citizen denixen2 - 11/30/2003 8:14:20 PM
I'm afraid not. Drengin.net isn't a game bundle, it's a game network.

For example, when a Drengin.net subscription ends, so ends access to the games. It's through Stardock Central that we can do this in a reasonably secure fashion.

by Avatar Frogboy - 11/30/2003 8:38:09 PM
I suspect this is the same business challenge that forces most game design shops to find a publisher--even for a successful game, most of the audience will prefer to see reviews/evaluations of a finished product before dropping money down. Best of luck to you all--you've done a great job with GalCiv and I wish you all the luck the free market can bring. I'll head on over to subscribe for The Altairian Prophecy shortly myself... =)

by Citizen FarAway Galciv - 11/30/2003 8:50:48 PM
Is it possible to upgrade to Drengin (as opposed to paying full price) if one can only pay through check? I haven't noticed an option for it on the order.txt page and just thought I'd ask (don't ya just love us non-credit card types? ;P ). In any event, I'm definitely going to pre-order the expansion in the very near future (the holiday week distracted me from doing it sooner).

Can't wait to hear about more developments concerning GalCiv2. :D

by Citizen Imaginos - 11/30/2003 11:08:59 PM
Imaginos: I'm sure there's a way. Just email sales@stardock.com Email and they'll bend over backwards to help on that.

by Avatar Frogboy - 12/1/2003 1:02:38 AM
Thanx for the link Frogboy. =)

by Citizen Imaginos - 12/1/2003 2:02:35 AM
Brad,
it's a pity you haven't got the pre-order numbers you were hoping for. Nice to see the longer term plan though. One suggestion I made before about Drengin net was the option of sponsorship. Not of adverts, but the option for indivuals who love a particular game to sponsor development of an update.
There are probably a few Drengin.net players ou there who would be willing and able to spend a larger amount of money to see their favourite games improved or redeveloped. I'll post a longer joeuser article on this idea, but the option to pledge x pounds for development project y (wuithin Drengin) would be nice. If project y starts then pledge x is collected. In return the sponsors get the game they want and the top z sponsors get acknowledged in the game.

Paul.

by Ambassador Solitair - 12/1/2003 5:08:22 AM
I was surprised to see the no multiplayer part for the sequel. I would love to have multiplayer options for the game. Not the most important thing, but, good part nevertheless. Pity.

Any chance of being able to control other (even fully customizable) race than the humans?

I think it would be fun to include religion in the game. Think of it as a political party perhaps, with some extreme ideas (which could go/be either way).

Anyway. I am not going to either upgrade to Drengin or pre-order the expansion pack any time soon. I will pay more money for customs tax than for the game (unless of course I only download) and this is not a good time for that.

I will get the expansion pack when/if it is out though.

by Citizen Efthimios - 12/1/2003 6:48:24 AM
"Ship Design but done in a way that we think you'll find much cooler than what you've seen before in other games."

As Space empire 4 or as MOO3 (booo!!!) ?

"Everyone runs around with a mega fleet problem"

Does that means ship suply ?

Such a good game, so little time. WINK!!!

by Citizen Unknown_Enemy - 12/1/2003 8:27:53 AM
I understand your position on releasing a slightly scaled-back expansion pack if the pre-orders and Drengin.net subscriptions are not up to snuff. Personally, I say build it and they will come in this case, but I am not the one taking the risks.

On another note, the expansion is going spread the Metaverse out a bit, true, but I think it might be even more interesting to watch. Looks like the ol' Spymaster will really have to cover some ground to keep up!

by Veteran Gerakken - 12/1/2003 12:32:53 PM
Stardock has done the best job of customer relations of any software company I've ever seen. I can't wait to see what the future holds.

by Citizen VincoUGA - 12/1/2003 1:27:19 PM
Stardock -

I hope when GALCIV 2 comes closer to starting work you get some user input - I'd hate to see another moo3 in the works. I've been very pleased with galciv overall and I hope the trend continues.

If you build it right - they will buy.
Congratulation!

by Citizen Star Ranger - 12/1/2003 7:50:35 PM
One thing I'd like to see is a private 'best scores' table or list stored locally on the computer the game is played on. It would be unofficial, of course, but would allow replay of games repeated times, to see if investing extra money in research paid off, if giving extra money to improve one's reputation was worth it, etc... There are many things I's like to try, to see what effect it had on my final score. I don't need, or want, it published on the metaverse, where I have to page through 50 pages of stats to find the one I'm looking for, and which oversimplifies into a single number. I'd rather have a local 'scoreboard' that kept track of the final scores in several different areas (as does the final game screen) but an overview for, say, 10 or 20 top-scoring games. Is such a thing a possibility for future inclusion?

by Citizen ancient-1 - 12/1/2003 8:11:09 PM
perhaps if post expansion release sales are better, u could toss in the features that can't be put in with the current numbers

anyways, i'm still praying that there might be LAN or hotseat multiplayer in the future =)

by Veteran bigshotweb - 12/2/2003 2:19:40 AM
In all these projects what is the future of the French version ? Sad

Today, to buy French version, it is to obtain the 1.10.73 (with 6 political parties which scratch the game with the passage towards the republic), it is not to be able to reach the patches because the serial number is refused by your server, it is not to be able to be recorded as player on METAVER (with the same pb with the serial number). Angry

Then my French version and the release Galactic Civilizations 1.12A ?

Then my French version and the release Galactic Civilizations 1.2 ?

Then my French version and the premium expansion pack: Galactic Civilizations, Altarian Prophecy ?

Is it necessary that the french distributor refunds me my purchase, and that I buy an English version directly at you ?

Carpe diem.

by Citizen Artiste - 12/2/2003 5:25:40 AM
I guess the trouble is, is that few people really believe in todays software industry, especially after so many abortions that have been released recently (MOO3 being the most famous :P )

I ended up using my GalCiv upgrade for $30 offer, which I'm happy with, but I know usually I'll wait until a game has been released and reviews have been written before spending any hard earned cash. I'm not very keen on the pay in advance idea, and obviously neither are a lot of other people

by Citizen DarkPaladin - 12/2/2003 6:39:10 AM
I am rather annoyed by geting advertisments for games and subscribtions I cant buy. Please sell it or stop disturbing me.

by Citizen Leonards_Papa - 12/2/2003 10:31:06 AM
Nice one! Look forward to future release of expansion and Galciv 2 ;)

by Citizen slyunt - 12/2/2003 10:57:44 AM
I think I'm in the minority, but the only parts of the expansion pack that interested me, were the new AIs, ships and to a lesser degree events. It now looks like the ships and events will be removed.

I've course I'm also one of the people who said I'd likely not buy the expansion pack anyway, so it's not going to change the statistics.

That's not to say I don't like GalCiv. I like it a lot. I've played it longer and more often than most games. I just don't see the addition delivering much I am interested in, so I'm not willing to shell out the extra money for it. For the record, my decision to not buy it has everything to do with the content, and nothing to do with the fact it's only available online. In the past currency exchange was a problem (in Canada), however the US$ is low right now so that's not even an issue. I don't say this to be mean, I think my interests in computer games defer from the average user today, so what I'd like to see, is rarely what game developers seem to want to do or what other paying customers want. For example, I have no interest in scenarios or map editors for GalCiv. There are probably lots of people who do.

However, a couple years down the road, you could definately count me as a strong yes for "would I buy Galactic Civilizations 2".

by Citizen Paguma - 12/2/2003 12:41:30 PM
Ummm yeah... I subscribed to Drengin.net because of the extra AI's, ships and events... now 2/3rds of that are being removed, so I'm more than a little disapointed because I too am not that excited by the scenario/campaign editor, but was more about the addition to the core game itself

by Citizen DarkPaladin - 12/2/2003 5:47:30 PM
well, chalk me up w. the last two posters. i know i can download a bunch of the fan-made events, etc., but i was planning on buying this expansion pack on the basis of the new races, ships, and events.

GalCiv 2 looks promising, though. And to be honest, The Political Machine looks cool enough to warrant a drengin.net subscription in and of itself.

by Citizen kix4trids - 12/2/2003 7:46:56 PM
I'll chime in here too. The ships and events are probably a big deal to many prospective buyers of the expansion pack. Scenario & map editors are nice, but they realistically benefit only a small proportion of your player base -- those individuals who have the time and interest to generate scenarios and maps. The rest of us (and I'm guessing that "the rest of us" numbers somewhere near 95%) would be much more likely to pay for an expansion pack that contains:

1) Enhanced AI
2) New ships & events
3) New races, either AI or playable
4) Upgraded graphics / artwork

Just my four cents.

FoulFoot

by Citizen FoulFoot - 12/2/2003 8:30:01 PM
I also agree that the ships/events that were initially promised were a big part of the allure for the expansion that caused me to go ahead and upgrade to Drengin.net. I hope that a way can be found to include them.

Otherwise, keep up the good work!

by Citizen jeff donohue - 12/3/2003 1:23:04 AM
I too am a bit bummed at some of the goodies that they appear to be dropping from the expansion, but you just can't win 'em all. Perhaps they could be included at a later date. The expansion still sounds very interesting to me, so I'm still planning to pre-order, or more likely, upgrade to Drengin.net since I've been able to find a method to upgrade through snailmail thanks to the link Brad provided. =)

Gotta agree with Paguma a few posts up: at this point I'm a definite 'yes' to buying GalCiv2 when it does come out in the next couple/few years. :D

by Citizen Imaginos - 12/3/2003 1:54:18 AM
There wasn't a great deal of time given on the poll either until all this was decided. It was only set up in November, and before the end of that month, what StarDock said whould be in the expansion seemed to vary a few times

For one I seem to remember that the 2 AI's were going to be dropped if there wasn't enough interest, and the rest would be released to Drengin.Net users, but now the AI's are being kept, but the ships and events are being dropped

Maybe if it had all been made a lot clearer back at the start of November, there would have been more positive feedback and more pre-orders placed? As it is, I can understand why so many decided to sit back and see what happened :|

by Citizen DarkPaladin - 12/3/2003 8:22:27 AM
I agree with most of the posts here. I was planning on buying the expansion pack but it was really the linked events and to a lesser degree the ships that interested me. But have not pre-ordered yet.
--Blee

by Citizen pillsbur - 12/3/2003 11:12:28 AM
I upgraded to Drengin for the purpose, but I have to say, the linked events and the two new AI's were the pieces I considered most interesting. Over an 18 month period, I'll be hoping that some more of the events and ships make it in, if indeed they get left out of the initial release, but I defeinitely consider dropping the events to be disappointing.

by Citizen Babcom280 - 12/3/2003 11:21:25 AM
there were linked events? ah shucks. and those got dropped?

i hope galciv two will have more linked events. i thin ka weak point of galciv was that there was no story. No real motivation for the player to play the game aside from the love of the spread sheet. after twenty game it becomes sort of mindless to play the game but i suppose that is a weakness of every game. it would add a different dimension if there was a story behind each game and if each game had a different story on the side. i am leaning on the idea of an event engine like the one moo3 was supposed to have. an evolving story line with the player with evolving events, sort of liek a pick your own story. decalre war on the so and so and it opens un new events and technology and have these events and stories charted down in the universe and perhaps affect the future games you play. had a major war with the torias, it screws up your relationshops with the torians in the bubble universe. things like that. unfortunately, idonthink this is possible or very easy. that being said. any one have any idea where galciv two is going>?

that being said.

what i wanted most from galciv expansion was more new ships, more events, and just more techonologies for netural, good, evil, and more trade goods. and maybe mroe planet conquering options. scenario editors and campagisn are nice, i knwo they can be fun but i mmuch rather have event editors or those of that nature.

by Citizen rubberduckyzz - 12/3/2003 8:04:58 PM
Down the line, we hope to add more features to the expansion pack after its release. I.e. if sales are good, then we can afford to add more.

Also, Strategy First has shown interest again in having it at the store so it is possible there may be a retail version of this expansion pack at some point.

by Avatar Frogboy - 12/5/2003 12:48:19 AM
Answer to the french version. Clearly it s a shame to have release it bugged as it seems to be. I read some comments in magazine destroying the game just because of that. No problem for me, I m 38 (today) in metaverse and I bought the game in english but please when you release something try to make a good job and not the job that has been made so try to make hard work for the 1.12 french version.

by Citizen Arkdoz - 12/5/2003 2:20:34 PM
"Also, Strategy First has shown interest again in having it at the store so it is possible there may be a retail version of this expansion pack at some point."
Nice... I thought I would not ever buy a game if it is not available in retail. Now I will surely buy expansion pack whenever it is out.
And one thing to Strategy First (if you are reading this): please, release it in retail! I know many people who would buy expansion if it was in retail.
Thanks.

by Citizen SergeiMaster - 12/6/2003 4:40:24 AM
cashflow has stopped me from pre ordering yet but i am working on it

by Citizen Goldenfire - 12/6/2003 3:42:38 PM
Arkdoz: Stardock doesn't release international versions of Galactic Civilizations. We have nothing to do with the French version. That is an issue between Strategy First and whomever they are working with in France.

Think about it for a second: The game is rock solid in English. If it's "buggy" in the French version. What changed? It's the same game. The only difference is the translated files which we are not involved with.

by Avatar Frogboy - 12/8/2003 1:28:03 AM
Frogboy: Thanks for the update, it sounds more promising knowing that some of the things being left out of the initial release could well be added later, I'll keep my fingers crossed!!! =)

by Citizen DarkPaladin - 12/8/2003 7:10:22 AM
Oh, I guess I wasn't the only person that was feeling that way. Maybe I'm not as disconnected as I thought I was. =)

What ever happened to that bomber ship we were told about a long time ago? That seems to be a ship that is so sadly missing from the game. You could even research different kinds of boming ships. Seems to be a whole thread of ships missing.

by Citizen Paguma - 12/8/2003 12:04:23 PM
First, I have to say congratulations on one of the best 4x games ever!

I just started playing GalCiv, and I love it. After seeing the quality of work involved in this game, I would trust to purchase any expansions that you might release for this game...and I know several of my friends would also be interested. Retail release would be more attractive...I like to have a physical manifestation of my purchases.

Second, I would encourage you to reconsider about the expansion...I think most players would be drawn to the extra ships, linked events, and additional AIs more than anything else you might have to offer (well MP not included). I, for one, always appreciate additional content over editors...although editors are nice, I think they come in second after content.

I hope you change your mind and include the additional content. I'm sure many people like me have missed your poll and would purchase the expansion set. Retail marketing will have a much wider audience than net marketing (all the mother's will have their kid's wish lists, for one).

Again, thanks for a great game...but please include the additional content.

by Citizen Wolf825 - 12/8/2003 2:04:07 PM
I'll toss my two bits in with the rest here, I will definately buy the expansion if it contains the AIs, ships and events... the scenarios in and of themselves are good bait for my hook too, but map/scenario design just doesn't have any appeal as I have no time to spare for work on my gaming experience. Gal Civ has so far been one of my most positive gaming experiences, so I'll probably be hooked into the franchise, but please (as the previous poster said) include the additional content.

by Citizen WalkerintheMist - 12/9/2003 2:05:29 AM
"Drengin.net upgrades: They improved but not enough. Most people are taking a wait and see attitude on the expansion pack OR are only willing to buy it at the store."

Yes, I read a few good articles you posted on both Joeuser and here. To get the interest in the Drengin network. You need some more good Games to get the Games you need the Subscriptions.

Could a business made to purchase the rights of some games for the Drengin.net in the hope that new product will generate interest? This new interest generating subscriptions to cover the cost.

by Diplomat Technician - 12/10/2003 11:12:28 AM
Just wanted to contribute here and add that I also upgraded to Drengin.net specifically for the GalCiv expansion and would be dissappointed if it does not contain the extra ships and events. The editor should be interesting but I believe that the silent majority of GalCiv players will not utilize it fully. Clearly there is a vocal minority here that is righfully thrilled with the editor feature and I am looking forward to playing some of their maps and scenarios. However, as I said, for the mostly silent majority of GalCiv players out there I hope you will reconsider "trimming" the expansion.

Also, I just want to put a plug in for Drengin.net. As I said I upgraded solely for the purpose of obtaiing the GalCiv expansion but to my surprise some of the other games I downloaded are just as cool. The Corporate Machine has been stealing a lot of my GalCiv time and I am really looking forward to the Political machine.

One final question. Any news on an updated time table for update releases?

by Citizen plephart - 12/10/2003 3:07:28 PM
Chalk me up as another that would love to purchase the expansion pack, but I'm a little hesitant based on the dreaded "cut list effect". Perhaps I'm just having MoO3-flashbacks here, but I start hearing about features that were important to me (ships) getting cut, I start shaking and holding my head, moaning "IFPs... what could have been..."

So I'm kind of in a holding pattern. I love GalCiv, and I've played it more than any other game in 2003. The customer service has been excellent. I have no problem paying and downloading - I'm just waiting to see if the expansion pack will truly be worth it. I suspect it will, but I very much understand the previous posters who have been a bit grumpy about cut features and less-than-thrilled about niche features like scenario editors.

by Citizen Yog Sloth - 12/10/2003 3:24:03 PM
I also decided to go the upgrade route for the expansion, as well as the other games. Last night I thought I'd try out The Corporate Machine and ended up playing till after 3 a.m. Why must you make such addictive games?! LOL I love those little yes-men sales execs that you fly around the map. :P I'm also looking forward to The Political Machine. :D Between TCM and GalCiv, there's hardly enough time for sleep. ;P

Have to add my thoughts... I've already upgraded to a Drengin.net subscription; still, the features I was looking for the most in the expansion were the new races, new events and new ships. An editor is not that useful to me.

By the way, where's the 1.12A patch? ;)
