Technology victories- too 'easy' or not?

Hello, first post (in GalCiv1 forum anyway)!

so, I have a friend who says that tech victories "do not require as much strategy". Now, I see how it is not competitive like influence or military victories, but with the complex tech tree required to get to Final Frontier, and the fact that you can't see the whole thing like in GalCivII, a tech victory is quite difficult at times. I believe they are quite balanced, at it depends on the arrangement of the galaxy, its size, and a player's skill with each type of civilization.

So- any thoughts on this?

I think if you think its too easy you can turn it off. I usually play with only conquest or alliance victories on (so if I don't feel like conquering my friends I can just ally with them). Influence victories are pointless anyways, since if you have enough influence the other empire's systems will rebel and join you anyway.

Even in technological victories, you still have to keep the other empires off you long enough to let you research your way to the final frontier. And if you focus all your efforts on technology, that can be pretty tough. Really, I've found that if you're at the point where you qualify for any of the victory conditions, the other empires wouldn't be able to oppose you in any way, shape or form anyhow, so it doesn't matter which one you choose.

A technological power could easily crank out Excaliburs and conquer the galaxy. An influencial power could easily cause the other empires to rebel. So there's really no way to oppose them.

Now, the easiest way to win, in my experience, is just to give yourself gobs and gobs of Diplomacy skill, research is constantly, and continually talk the other empires into declaring war on each other. While they're killing each other, you're sitting in the background laughing and building up your empire. Once they figure out whats going on (if they ever do), its too late. Mwahahaha!

Of course, I don't play on insane difficulty levels either.
