Hello!

I started the campaign yesterday but I got pretty much owned by the "bad guy". I'm at the first mission, where you've just met the Altarians and they're at war with this other race - Knox or something, so you're at war with them too.

I was playing on Normal. Initially, I went for a balanced race setup with points in Diplomacy, Economy and some other non-military stuff I can't recall. I also went for the Industrialist party for a boost in production.

Now, as the game starts, I have one star system, the Altarians have two and the bad guys three. I can colonize another one pretty soon, but before I can get another ship out, the Knox people have taken all the available ones.

Needless to say that with six or so star systems and a considerable technological and military advancement, I lost the game. The Altarians fell first, but I soon followed. He had a Death Knight while I was still barely managing to get a few Battle Hammers out.

The main problems are money - there can be no trade since I can't make peace with the guy so I have to rely on my economy. However, that just doesn't seem to cut it. Secondly, I could use some advice as to how I can get up the tech tree a bit faster to catch up.

Thanks!

Don't have any really good advice - but if you need to colonize faster you could buy the ships to colonize faster.
